The Journey of School Pictures

I love pictures in general, but school pictures are always uncomfortable. Not only are they extremely posed, but there is generally a long line of people staring at you as they wait for their turn. Yes, school pictures are so much fun. Looking through all of my school pictures I have found that I can break them up into three general categories. (And you get to see how glasses changed over the years!)

First is the so-cute-they-can't-do-much-to-make-you-look-bad:

Preschool

1st grade

3rd grade

Then comes those middle school years that are so-awkward-they-can't-do-much-to-make-you-look-cute:

7th grade

(We'll skip the rest of those, they are just too painful) Then comes The Senior Picture. The one where you are supposed to look great because it is going to be printed in color in the yearbook, and be a reminder of your most important year of school (However, I think it could still fall into the awkward phase):

12th Grade

Lucky for me, as a teacher I get to have a school picture taken every year. And I get to wear that picture on my name tag around my neck every day. And it hangs on the school wall (thankfully, not big). And it goes home with all of my students who order a class picture, so it is how they will remember me. YIKES!!! Seriously, this school picture caused me stress. I carefully chose a shirt, tried to get my hair to cooperate, and took my place on the swivel chair with a long line of teachers (waiting for their turn) looking on. And this was the result:

I don't hate it! YAY!!! Yes, I have all of my little hairs on top sticking all over the place (these hairs caused the photographer stress, but since they are very much a part of my life I don't mind them there), but for a put-your-toes-on-the-green-line-and-smile picture, it works!

I really like your new teacher picture. You look so grown up and pretty. You've come a long way from those "awkward teenage years" for sure! ;) And your little kid pictures are too adorable for words! I think that Ivy looks a lot like you did. So darling!

It is fun to see how we age. I have quite a collection of school pictures now. I usually hate them until several years later and then wish I could look like I did then now! I like you new teacher picture.

Have you ever read Educating Esme? I totally recommend it! It's about a first year teacher and her adventures. She also wrote a really good book about getting kids to read.

I love hearing about your teaching adventures. Keep them coming!

kate, you look super cute in your photo. and yes, i hate school pictures as well. but if you recall, i went with you to senior photos and we were flirting it up big with the photographer and that's why you look pretty good in your senior photo. let's face it though, photographs where you have to look nice are lame.
