Have I ever mentioned that I have WAY more boys than girls in my class? It's a first grade phenomenon at our school - we all have about 2 boys to every girl. The difference in numbers changes the classroom dynamic. They have always been quite a talkative and energetic group, but even with all their energy we made it all the way to January without major problems. However, the past few weeks they have been out of control. I even had another teacher ask me what was going on with my class. I told her that I wish I knew! I don't know if they have just gotten too comfortable, or what, but this week was my breaking point. After trying several things, I decided it was time to play the "Mean Teacher" card.
Being a mean teacher is just as rough for the teacher as it is for the students! The last few days have been rotten. I have left school ready to give up teaching. However, I am happy to report that they are getting better! I am hopeful that after a few more days of being mean I can start to be nice again. It would be so wonderful!
Yesterday was an especially long day. I was not excited to go back today. My students started coming in, and one little boy walked up to me and handed me a plastic grocery sack. I opened it and found this:

A gorgeous yellow/orange rose! I was so surprised! I gave him a big hug and told him how much I loved it, then I stuck it in a mason jar with some water. It made me smile every time I saw it. I have never been much of a flower girl, but this one truly made my day! It sure is a good thing that teaching has it's happy moments that can make you forget about all the bad ones!

There must be something in the water. I have 7 girls and 16 boys in my class! What is happening to all the girls in this world?
That is so sweet. I love that he gave you a rose. And it sure did smell yummy too!
That is the sweetest rose ever! What a kind thing to do for a teacher... especially after a week like this. That kid is in tune!
Oh no, I'm so sorry! I remember going through times like that every year! Don't worry, it will get better! :)
